Family Computer User Agreement

Because the Internet can be such a dangerous place, it is important to make rules about the computer and make sure all family members understand and agree to those rules. Signing an agreement can help.

Family Computer User Agreement

The members of this family agree to abide by the following rules. Violation of the rules will result in loss of computer privileges.

1. The use of the computer is a privilege, not a right.

2. In order to stay safe, we will never give out our last name and specific location. (recommended location is a made-up town name or vague area such as upstate New York or central Florida). Instead, we will use the following:
Real Name Nickname for Online Location
_______________________ _______________________ _______________________
_______________________ _______________________ _______________________
_______________________ _______________________ _______________________
_______________________ _______________________ _______________________
_______________________ _______________________ _______________________

3. No one will ever reveal their passwords to anyone other than mom or dad. It is sometimes difficult when someone asks but the consequences of sharing this information can be disasterous.

4. If something is typed on the computer or put on the Internet, it is no longer private and it is subject to mom or dad looking at it.

5. We all agree to limit our time on the computer. We understand that it is easy to spend a lot of time but it is not healthy and it will end up interfering with other activities.

The Kids Agree to:

  • I will NEVER MEET ANYONE THAT I MET ONLINE even if I have talked to them for a long time and they say that they are your age or if they offer me something.
  • We will go to mom or dad if we feel threatened by someone or feel uncomfortable about something we have seen on the computer. The password to say to mom or dad to let them know that this is an important situation that needs immediate attention is CYBERDANGER.
  • If I see a page that says, "18 or older", I will not click on it.
  • I will not download pictures or programs unless I ask Mom or Dad first.
  • I will not share pictures of myself online.
  • I will not believe everything I see online because I understand that anyone can post anything online.
  • I agree that nothing that I post on the Internet is private because anyone can see it, and this includes mom and dad.
  • If I create a MySpace page or Webpage with Mom or Dad's permission, I will keep it private and give the password to Mom or Dad.

The Parents Agree to:

  • Mom and Dad agree to drop everything they are doing and talk about it and investigate the situation if the password is used. Mom and Dad also agree to not punish the kids if they have been tricked into a dangerous situation because they are telling about the situation (this does not stop the parent from lecturing and talking).
  • We will discuss uncomfortable situations as openly as possible.
  • We will try and stay as close as possible while the child is online and answer questions as needed.
