- The Charter of the United Nations went into effect on October 24, 1945. At that time it's ultimate purpose was "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war" but now it also helps nations with education, disease, hunger and poverty.
- In 1947, the U.N. General Assembly adopted a U.S. sponsored resolution that declared October 24th as United Nations Day.
