About the Auto Complete Feature in Internet Explorer

You are here:

Auto-Complete with Internet Explorer 5.0+

Some of the new bells and whistles that come with the newer Internet Explorer versions are great! They can however, be frustrating, especially if you have kids. One of the new functions that can be very handy is the auto complete feature for when you type in Web page addresses into the address bar. It will give you a drop down list of addresses that you have previously visited that start with the same letters. If mom or dad visit sites that are not appropriate for the kids, the kids will have easy access to that site just by starting to type a similar address to the inappropriate address. Although I do not recommend for children to type Web page addresses, they still might do this and if you visit inappropriate sites, this could lead to a very embarrassing situation for both family members.

Also the auto-complete feature will store words that you have previously put into search boxes and forms at Web sites such as search strings, names, email addresses, Website passwords and even credit card numbers. If you entered something in error in one of those forms, that wrong information will keep returning or it could come back to haunt you if you were searching for something that you don't want your children to know about.

You can turn this feature off or you can modify what has been saved. If you like the feature and want to keep it on but you know that this specific problem will keep happening, you may want to enable multiple user accounts on your pc. With multiple users enabled on your pc, each user will have their own auto-complete information.
