*Confused?
If you don't understand what file extensions are and why you can open certain files, learn all about File Extensions, Registered Viewers, Changing File Associations, and File Viewers with this primer.*
DOCX Files
You received a document that is in docx format and your word processor won't open it. Microsoft Office 2007 default file extension is now docx. Older versions of Word will not open these unless you download and install the Compatibility Pack for your Office version. But what if you don't have Microsoft Office or the computer that you are on won't allow you to install updates? Here is a fix!
You can use a free online file converter for docx documents at Docx-converter.com. All you do is upload the document and enter your email address. They email you back the converted document in the format that you request. If you can download and install programs to the computer you are using, you can download and install Viewers and Converters for Word that will open docx, doc, dot files.
ODT Files
If you receive an ODT document and you can open it, it was created with Open Office which is very similar to Microsoft Office, but it is free. Many people use that now and often they forget to save it as a DOC file, so it can be easily opened. You can ask the person that sent it to you to resave it as a DOC file or you can set yourself up so you can always open DOC or ODT files without installing software. (Learn about portable applications) To do this requires a USB Flash Drive which can be purchased for very little money. If you purchase a SanDisk Cruzer it will come preloaded with programs that will run off the flash drive. If you already have a flash drive or wish to purchase a more inexpensive model, you can download and install a portable application of Open Office that will run a full version of this office suite without installing it to the computer. All you will need to do is plug in the flash drive and click on the file to open Open Office. If you can install programs on the computer you are using, you can the full version of Open Office instead of buying Microsoft Office.
