Your Family's Guide to Email Using Outlook Express

Set Up Rules To Automatically Delete Spam

You are here:
Internet Family Fun Home > Internet Help > Guide to Outlook Express for Email Help > Set Up Rules To Automatically Delete Spam

Now that we know how to set message rules we can create a rule to delete spam. Because we are setting up our rules in order and using the "stop processing rules" command, we shouldn't have any emails get accidently deleted. Remember though that you should check your deleted folder to make sure that something isn't filtered accidently.

Determining key words is difficult because spammers often use misspelling to bypass filters. No filter works 100% correctly but you should be able to delete some of the ads and porn.

To add a spam rule:

The first thing to do is to create a new rule by clicking on Tools - Message Rules - Mail

Click on New in the Message Rules dialog window.

In the New Mail Rule dialog window, Select the Conditions for your rule: as Where the Subject line contains specific words and Where the message body contains specific words.

Select the Actions for your rule as Delete it.

Under the Rule Description click on the And and select Messages match any one of the criteria

Click either one of the Contains specific words link under the Rule Description.

Now you will have to enter each keyword in the Type Specific Words dialog box.

I have a list that I use. I am putting it in a text file because it contains some words that are not for "mixed company" - words that are unfortunately used by porn spammers.

Of course there are many more words that can be added and you may not want to use all the words in my list. My list is only to get you started. As you receive spam you can add to your list.

Once you are done adding all your words, click OK. You will need to add the words again to the other "contains specific words" link.

When you are done click OK.

Is there another way to stop spam?
I know this seems like a lot of work to stop spam. There are other ways to stop spam.

Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) have spam filters that you can activate. My ISP uses Postini. It seems to work pretty good but it took a lot of "training" it before I got the emails that I wanted.

There is a program that you can download that will preview your email before you download it to your email program that use to compose and read email (such as Outlook Express). The name of the program is MailWasher. I found it to work well but previewing the email before downloading it was an extra step and often I would forget and leave Outlook Express open and then it would download the email before I had a chance to "wash" it. This program is shareware.

Next, we will add someone that keeps sending you email to the blocked senders list. This is a bit quicker and easier than making a message rule.
