What Your Computer's System Is
When purchasing software or hardware, you need to make sure you match or exceed the listed system requirements. Also when you have a problem you might be asked what version of software you have and your system requirements. Here is how to find what is installed on your computer.
System Requirements - Operating System, Manufacturer, Processor and Amount of RAM
- Go to your desktop
- Put your mouse cursor over your My Computer icon
- Click your right mouse button
- Select Properties from the menu
- Click on the General tab if it isn't already selected
- You will see your operating system and version, manufacturer of the computer, the brand of processor, processor speed, and the amount of RAM installed.
System Requirements - Your Version of Software
Many programs that you buy work with others that come preinstalled on your computer. Therefore you should now if you have these programs installed and what version you have.
Important programs to note (whether you use them or not):
Internet Explorer
Outlook Express
Other programs to note:
Firefox
The email program that you use
To find the version of the program that you are using
- Open the program (Start>Programs)
- Click on the text at the top that says "Help"
- Click on "About..."
- You will see Version and a number after that. It is only necessary to note the whole number and the first two digits after the decimal point (i.e. 5.50)
System Requirements - Available Hard Disk Space
- Open My Computer
- Place your mouse cursor over the C: drive.
- Click your right mouse button
- Select "Properties" from the menu
- Note your "Free Space" on drive C:
- If you have other drives on your computer do the same for those drives
System Requirements - Available Ports
Determine whether you have any available ports to plug accessories into. If you are out of USB ports you can purchase a USB port hub that turns one USB port into four ports that you can plug accessories into.
