Internet Filtering

You are here:

Some ISPs Offer Content Filtering

Many Internet service providers (ISPs) now offer content filtering with your monthly service or for a small fee. This may be a better solution for your family than buying and installing filtering software. ISP filtering is activated at your ISPs office and content that isn't acceptable isn't transferred to your computer. Filtering software that is installed on your computer has the content transferred to your computer and then it is blocked. Some ISPs even offer filtering software that you can install. Either way, if you can get Internet filtering that is acceptable to your family with the service that you are already paying for, it worth checking out.

Advantages of ISP Based Filtering

  • The cost may be included with the fee your already pay. Several filtering software packages require you to pay for updates after one year, so you could really save.
  • Instead of installing software, all you may have to do is call your ISP to activate the filtering or activate it online.
  • Most filtering software programs need to be updated and since your ISP will be updating the software, it won't be necessary for you to be concerned about the constant updating.
  • The filtering is much harder to over-ride because the offending content isn't even delivered to your computer.

Disadvantages of ISP Based Filtering

  • You may not be able to over-ride the filtering if you want to view the site that is being blocked.
  • The content that is filtered may not coincide with your family's values.
  • If the ISP just provides software, you will still have to update it.
  • If you can activate the filtering online and your child has your password, the child can easily turn it off.

Some ISPs That Offer Filtering

To see if your ISP offers filtering or parental controls, go to their homepage or give them a call.

ISP filtering may be an ideal solution for your family. Remember though, your family is unique and your filtering solution will be unique as well. Evaluate what your family's needs are and select the correct solution for your family.
